Matt Williams confirmed as Timisoara Saracens’ new Head Coach

Ahead of the team reunion, Timisoara Saracens confirm the three seasons’ appointment as Head Coach of Matt Williams, former Scotland Head Coach and Leinster Director of Rugby.

With an expertise of over 20 years in coaching European and Australian elite rugby and impressive results, Australian Matt Williams accepted the challenge of returning to the Northern Hemisphere to conduct Romania’s champions for the next three seasons.

"I am delighted to begin working with Timisoara Saracens. I have been very impressed with the clubs highly ambitious plans to succeed. As rugby in Romania is expanding in both quality and performance, I am looking forward to commencing the hard work, along side the players and management team to ensure that Timisoara Saracens remain at the top of Romanian rugby and fighting to make a mark in the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

I would like to thank the club’s leadership for having the belief in me to lead the team at this exciting time in the club’s history."

Although coaching beginnings connect Matt Williams to his home country, where in 1995 was appointed the Wallabies’ Assistant Coach for the World Rugby Championship training camps and in 1998 lead NWS Waratahs to their Ricoh National Championship title, his inspirational leadership made a mark during his 8 years of European rugby as Director of Rugby with Leinster rugby (1999-2003), Defensive Coach of Ireland (2001), Head Coach of Ireland “A” (2002-2003), Head Coach of Scotland (2003-2005) and Head Coach of Ulster Rugby (2007-2009). Matt contributed undisputedly to the rise of one of the most emblematic Irish clubs, bringing Leinster from the 35th position on the European charts as high as being crowned Celtic League champions in 2001 and Heineken Cup semi-finalists in 2003.

In March 2002, former British and Irish Lions captain Brian O’Driscoll stated for “The Irish Times” that Matt Williams “has brought Leinster out of the doldrums so to speak. […] From my point of view he's been one, if not the most inspirational coaches I've ever had.”

When appointed Head Coach of Ireland “A” in 2002, Matt was assisted by Saracens’ current Director of Rugby, Mark McCall, Ulster’s Head Coach at that time. In 2007, when Mark McCall made the move to England, Matt Williams succeeded him at the lead of the province.

5 years after his return to Australia, Matt Williams accepts the challenge of applying his European success recipe and of making another mark in rugby history, this time leading Romania’s quadruple champions, Timisoara Saracens.

“The 2021 Timisoara Saracens project continues and we are now at its mid-stage. We are set that four years from now Timisoara Saracens will be the first Romanian team to qualify for the ER Challenge Cup quarter finals. It is a daring goal, but not impossible, a goal which we believe honours our city, our club and Romanian rugby. I’d like to thank Matt Williams for accepting the offer to join our club. He is the coach which our club needs to step up the ladder of European achievements. We never settle for less, we are determined to keep making history and I am confident that Matt will help us reach this goal.” (Dusan Filipas, CEO Timisoara Saracens).
