EPCR have confirmed the European Rugby Continental Shield 2017/2018 fixtures

EPCR have confirmed the match schedule of the 2017/18 European Rugby Continental Shield and have announced an important modification of the competition’s format

 

 

 

This season’s European Rugby Continental Shield, organized by the European Professional Club Rugby, in collaboration with the Italian Rugby Federation (FIR) and Rugby Europe will meet four representatives from the Italian championship Eccellenza (Pataro Rugby Calvisano, Femi-CZ Rugby Rovigo, Rugby Petrarca and Rugby Viadana), as well as Romania's Timisoara Saracens, RC Batumi from Georgia, Heidelberger RK of Germany and Portugal's Centro Desportivo Universitario de Lisboa (CDUL Rugby).

 

The eight teams will compete against each other from two pools of four teams each:

This season’s competition will be played into two stages: The Pool Stage and the Play-Off stage as set out below.

 

The Pool Stage:

 

The teams in Pool A will play one match against the teams of Pool B and the ranking of each pool will be established based on he points awarded after each match as follows:

  1. The winners of the matches will be awarded 4 match points or 5 points, should they score at least four tries in the process;
  2. The team that loses the match shall be awarded no match points, but they can be awarded 1 match point should they score at least 4 tries or lose by a margin of 7 points or fewer; or they may be awarded 2 points if they score at least 4 tries in the process and lose by a margin of 7 points or fewer.
  3. Teams that draw a match shall each be awarded 2 match points and any of them that scores four tries or more in the process, they will be awarded a further more match point.

 

The winner and the runner-up of Pool A will then play against the winner and the runner-up of Pool B on a home and away bases:

     1st place, Pool A v 2nd place Pool B (HA1)

     1st place, Pool B v 2nd place Pool A (HA2)

 

The teams that achieve the best aggregate results in their respective home and away matches of the January 2018 round will then qualify for the play-off stage.

 

Play-off stage:

 

The HA1 and HA2 winners will play against each other on a home and away basis during the EPCR weekends of March/April 2018 to compete for one of the two places available for the 2018/19 European Rugby Challenge Cup competition.

The winner of this Play-Off will be the team that achieves the best aggregate result of the two matches.

 

The second place of the 2018/19 European Rugby Challenge Cup will be awarded to the winner of the second Play-Off which will be disputed by Russia's Enisei STM and Krasny Yar on a home and away basis.

 

The two winners of the Play-Off stage will then compete in the 2017/18 European Rugby Continental Shield Final in Bilbao, to be scheduled for the beginning of May 2018.
